Sit at the piano with an Ovation teacher. Play whatever you know, or nothing at all. You leave with your stage, your first book, your class time and the date of your first showcase.

What happens
Thirty minutes, four parts
It’s a conversation at the piano, not a test. A parent or guardian stays for the whole session with students under 18.
We get to know you
What you love to listen to, what you’d love to play, and any lessons you’ve had before.
We listen
Play anything you know, or try a few short games for rhythm, ear and reading. Nobody is graded.
We place you
Your stage and book, your starting lesson, your group by age, and the song you’ll play on stage.
No pressure
Ready? Your teacher can enroll you on the spot. Want to think it over? Take your Your Plan card home.
Who it’s for
Every student starts here
Ages 8–10
Junior players
Bring the grown-up who’ll be the practice partner; they’re part of the team. Juniors are placed into Junior Debut groups of 4 or fewer.
Ages 11 to adult
New or returning
Never played, or stopped years ago? We’ll find the right version of Book 1 and place you in a Debut or Encore group by age.
Already playing
Advanced players
Bring a piece. If you’re past the early books, the session becomes a short placement audition for Artist, Specialist or the Artist Certificate.
Before you come
Nothing to prepare
No practice needed and nothing to buy. Just come as you are.
- Bring
- The student, and any books from past lessons. If they already play, one song they like, even half of one.
- Arrive
- Five minutes early. Sessions start on time so the next family isn’t kept waiting.
- Who stays
- A parent or guardian stays for the whole session with students under 18.
- Where
- Beaumont, Texas (west end). The address is in your confirmation email.
- Need to change it?
- Use the Reschedule or Cancel link in your confirmation email, at least 24 hours ahead if you can.

Before you book
Is it really free?
Yes. Placement is free for every student, with no obligation to enroll. It’s normally a $75 session.
What if my child has never touched a piano?
Perfect. Most of our students start from zero. We place them in Book 1 and they play a real song on stage in 90 days.
Do I have to decide on the spot?
No. If you’re ready, your teacher can enroll you that day. If not, take your Your Plan card home and enroll when you’re ready, while seats in your group last.
What does it cost after placement?
Every price is on the pricing page. You choose Full Score (pay in full) or Monthly at placement.
